Elephant – Years 4 & 5 Mr Brightman & Mrs Leivers
Welcome to the Elephant Class Page! We are a mixed class of Year 4 and 5 children who are always keen to try our very best and have a go at anything! Mr Brightman is our teacher and we are supported by Mrs Leivers.
Our Autumn topic is all about the murky streets of Victorian London. We will be delving into various aspects of Victorian life, such as being a child in Victorian times, Victorian schools, the effects of the industrial revolution, amazing inventions of the era, as well as the dreaded workhouses.
I hope to announce a Victorian-related class trip in the next few weeks...watch this space!
At Brockley, we follow the 'Talk 4 Writing' method of teaching writing - we firmly believe that this interactive, engaging and inclusive model is key to improving the quality of our children's writing.
In Elephant class, we begin each writing focus by reading, studying and discussing a quality 'model text,' which allows the children to see what a good example looks like. To embed the rhythms, vocabulary and style of the text, we use things like story maps, chanting the text and drama games.
The next stage of the process is 'imitation,' where the children watch me write my version of the model text, then have a go at adapting it into their own piece of writing.
Finally, when the children have had chance to 'have a go,' they write their own independent piece, which is then published in their Big Write books.
To inspire the children in their writing this term, we will be using extracts from The Vanishing Trick by Jenni Spangler, Street Child by Berlie Doherty and Cogheart by Peter Bunzl.
At Brockley, we follow the White Rose Maths method of teaching. This involves the teaching of new methods and ideas, interactive practice, followed by 'Varied Fluency' questions in books to allow the children to practise what they have learned. The differentiated resources allow the children to start at a level of their choosing each lesson and move up if they need more challenge. There is also a series of problem solving and reasoning questions to allow children to deepen their understanding. Feedback is delivered through 'live marking' and verbal feedback during the lesson to help the children address any mistakes straight away.
Y4 Times Table Check
By the end of Year 4, children are expected to be confident with all of their times tables (up to 12 x 12.) To check this, all Y4 children take part in the Y4 Times Table Check in the summer term. This is administered online by the class teacher and consists of 24 random times tables questions. See the link below for more information:
Please encourage children to practise their times tables as often as possible using TT Rockstars - the app is available on tablets and phones, as well as online on PC or laptop.
PE takes place every Tuesday afternoon and is led by Mrs Leivers. At Brockley, we follow the Real PE scheme of learning, which encourages the children to take responsibility for their own targets, challenges and next steps. Children need to arrive on a Tuesday wearing their PE kits, and should not be wearing jewellery of any kind.
Y5 swimming lessons take place on a Friday morning (starting 19th September 2022) at the Go! Active Leisure Centre in Clowne. Mrs Leivers will send further information shortly.
