  • Safer Parking at Brockley Gates

    Tue 17 Jan 2023

Safer Parking at Brockley Primary School Gates

Driving children to school is seen as the most convenient choice for parents with busy lives. Many parents take the view that by driving their children to school they are keeping them safe. Yet the combination of each individual decision means an increase in vehicle traffic and congestion particularly at the school gate. This has in recent days caused accidents, fall outs and dangerous situations that could have caused injury or even death to a member of our community.

Many children now miss out on the opportunity to develop vital road safety skills with their parents on the way to school. They fail to build up confidence and learn the ability to manage risk walking around their local community.

Walking can improve overall fitness levels in children and adults. It is a cheap low impact way to exercise. Getting active in our daily lives can have a big impact on health issues such as obesity.
We realise that there are some parents/carers who have no alternative but to drive their children to school, however, many are driving short distances where walking is a real option.

Even those who have to drive to school can do their bit by parking away from the school entrance and walking for part of the journey.

What can you do to help keep everyone safe around the school gates?

    Please don’t:

Block the road - emergency vehicles and other traffic may need access
Park on yellow lines, zig-zags or block the school entrance

Park on the pavement, across dropped kerbs or residents’ driveways
Park opposite or within 10 metres of a junction
Park where you will cause inconvenience to other road users
Leave your vehicle with the engine still running
Stop in the middle of the road to drop your child off, even for a few seconds

Shout or be abusive to local residents if you encounter any issues please report them to school or CREST Home | CREST Derbyshire

    Yellow zig-zag lines

Please be aware that the yellow zig-zag lines outside schools indicate the length of road where stopping or waiting is strictly prohibited.

    Double yellow lines

Double yellow lines mean no waiting at any time and there are no excuses for the majority of road users.

The only exceptions are for disabled badge holders who are legally entitled to park up on the road where double yellows are painted.

These changes make a real difference to the congestion around schools, making the school run less stressful and far safer for everyone.

  • Staying safe and being a good friend on apps, sites and games

    Thu 12 Jan 2023

Staying safe and being a good friend on apps, sites and games

Children and young people have spent much more time on devices than ever before during lockdown, here is some information about staying safe online and principles you can help us remind your children about.

There is a handy fridge flyer to help parents at toptipscorona.lgfl.net which you may want to print out and keep.

Please do not worry too much about screen time - think instead about screen quality, balance and mental health. The Children's Commissioner has provided a framework called the ‘Digital Five a Day’ with five things to think about each day to help put that into practice.

It is really important children get the opportunity to chat to friends, so it's great to hear that many of them have been chatting online during lockdown. We are sure that this will continue over the summer, so please help us reinforce some key messages about appropriate behaviour to keep everyone safe and happy.

In recent months there have been reports of children being upset by bullying on chat apps and via inline gaming, as well as some very distressing conversations being shared between friendship groups. This can usually be avoided if we remind children and young people to look out for their friends, not say anything that they wouldn't like to hear themselves, and always stop or stand up for others if someone gets upset.

Please remind your children never to share scary or rude images, even to complain about them. If they do see something that worries them or that might be wrong, all they need to do is ask for help from a trusted adult. They could talk to you or to us, or they may feel more comfortable talking anonymously to Childline. If you or they are concerned about an adult's behaviour towards a child online, report them to CEOP. And as a parent, you can also contact the NSPCC - O2 advice line on 0808 800 5002.

One more thing - this may sound like more relevant to older children, but the very youngest children need reminding not to get undressed or changed online. There’s a fun song to get this message across at undressed.lgfl.net (plus background information for you).

Thank you for your support - do let us know if you have any questions.

  • Dangerous Driving & Parking

    Thu 12 Jan 2023

I appreciate the weather this morning was horrible but that is no excuse for the dangerous and illegal parent parking and drop off.

We know at least one parked car was shunted and may have been damaged as a result of the incidents this morning.

Please consider leaving extra time for your journey to enable everyone to park sensibly so we can keep everyone safe.

  • Household Vouchers

    Thu 12 Jan 2023

    Grocery voucher - January 2023

    The vouchers are available for:

children who receive benefit related free school meals

children in an early years setting (nurseries and pre-schools) who receive free childcare for 2 year-olds or the early years pupil premium for 3 and 4-year-olds

care leavers aged up to 21 years of age living independently

No application is needed - vouchers will be sent by email or text message. . Vouchers will be sent to parents / carers from 10 January and it may take up to 2 weeks to distribute all vouchers.

Vouchers will be sent in alphabetical order by the name of the child, so parents / carers with more than one child should expect to receive vouchers separately, possibly with a number of days in-between.

Once all vouchers have been sent we will update this webpage and provide details of what parents / carers should do if they haven’t received a voucher and believe they are eligible.
