  • FSM Holiday Clubs

    Wed 22 Nov 2023

    Dear Parent / Carer

Did you know that as well as free school meals during term time, you are also entitled to access FREE holiday clubs this winter holiday?

It’s About Me is a FREE Holiday Activity and Food Programme funded by the Department for Education, designed for children and young people across Derbyshire to have healthy, active, fun-filled school holidays. It’s About Me believe that everyone deserves a good break and that school holidays are better when children and young people are active, having fun, being entertained and learning new things.

If your child is aged between 4-16 and is eligible for benefits-related free school meals, then they are entitled to access the It’s About Me holiday clubs for free! There are a huge range of activities available including sports and games, arts and crafts, cookery, dance and music. Programmes vary depending on the type and location of each local club and each will holiday club will give your child a nutritious meal too!

We hope you will take advantage of these fantastic FREE holiday clubs across Derbyshire so your child/children can have a fun-filled and safe holiday!

    Booked but can’t attend?

During our summer programme, we had a large numbers of spaces that were booked but the child did not attend. If you book an activity for your child and they can no longer attend please contact the provider to cancel the space. Most clubs have a waiting list so spaces can be given to another child if the organisation knows your child is not coming.

If you are eligible for FREE It’s About Me holiday provision, you will receive a unique IAM code from your child’s school before Monday 4th December 2023. If you have not received your code, but believe your child is eligible for the programme, please contact your school office.

If you are not eligible for free school meals but would still like to attend a holiday programme this winter, a number of our holiday club providers also offer places for children who are not eligible too; we call this a 'blended approach'. These places are either paid for by parents and carers or are offered at a subsidised rate through other funding the holiday club has received. Visit the It's About Me website and contact holiday clubs directly for more information on what they offer.

To book your activities and to find out more information go to www.itsaboutmederbyshire.co.uk To receive programme information and updates directly to your inbox, Sign-Up to It’s About Me updates.

The winter holiday clubs will take place from Wednesday 27th to Friday 29th December 2023 and Tuesday 2nd to Friday 4th January 2024. Bookings open from Monday 4th December 2023.

  • Big Ambition Survey - Gentle Reminder

    Fri 17 Nov 2023

Children or parents can complete the survey here: www.childrenscommissioner.gov.uk/thebigambition. Further resources are available on our website.

It is really important that the pupils at Brockley Primary School have participated in The Big Ambition survey and had their say.

I want to ensure that the voices of all children in the Chesterfield area are fairly represented in the findings so that I can share their views with the most senior members of the country.

I must reiterate that it is vital that all children have their voice heard through this survey because, as Children’s Commissioner for England, I have a statutory duty to protect and promote the views and interests of children. The Big Ambition provides a much-needed opportunity for the children of England to tell political decision makers what is important to them ahead of the General Election. I will be sharing their responses with Government to ensure that children’s voices are heard.

Please share the survey and resources with teachers in your school and encourage them to use it in their lessons. Children can complete the survey in assemblies, form times, PSHE or in other lessons this term. The survey can also be done as homework and parents can assist children who cannot complete the survey themselves (children under 5 and children with Special Educational Needs). This is a great opportunity to teach children about politics and why it is important for them to use their voice. Be sure to check out the lesson plans on my website if you want to teach your pupils more about politics before they fill in the survey!

Please do get in touch if you have any problems. My team is happy to support with the roll out in any way we can.

    Yours sincerely,

    Dame Rachel De Souza

    Children’s Commissioner for England

  • Do you know about Protected Characteristics? Do you know how we promote them at Brockley?

    Wed 15 Nov 2023

Promoting the Protected Characteristics at Brockley Primary School

We work to ensure that our children understand that:

There are no outsiders at Brockley

    Everyone is different

    We celebrate our differences

We are all equal in our differences

The Equality Act became law in 2010. It covers everyone in Britain and protects people from discrimination, harassment and victimisation. Everyone in Britain is protected. This is because the Equality Act protects people against discrimination because of the protected characteristics that we all have. Under the Equality Act, there are nine Protected Characteristics:

    1. Age
    2. Disability
    3. Gender reassignment
    4. Race
    5. Religion or belief
    6. Marriage or civil partnership
    7. Sex
    8. Sexual orientation
    9. Pregnancy and maternity

At , we actively promote these in our curriculum and work to embed them into our ethos.

Under the Equality Act you are protected from discrimination:

    • When you are in the workplace
    • When you use public services like healthcare (for example, visiting your doctor or local hospital) or education (for example, at your school or college)
    • When you use businesses and other organisations that provide services and goods (like shops, restaurants, and cinemas)
    • When you use transport
    • When you join a club or association (for example, your local rugby club)
    • When you have contact with public bodies like your local council or government departments
