  • Y4, Y5 & Y6 Children - Changes for summer term

    Thu 25 May 2023

    Dear Brockley Families

This term has been a terribly tricky one for our children and team, as we have tried to manage the long-term absence of a colleague. Despite our best efforts we have been unable to secure a long-term placement cover teacher, and this has led to a further review of planning and teacher deployment for the summer term.

As you can imagine with such a small teaching team, developing a plan that supports all our children and causes minimum disruption is incredibly difficult, but we think we have a solution that is fair to everyone.

For the summer term Mrs Wall, Mrs Rodgers, Mrs Leivers and Miss Dale will teach across Elephant and Lion classes, they will be supported by Miss Chapman and Mrs Greevy - this will mean that the children will almost always have a member of the Brockley teaching team, someone they know and who knows them.

From June 5th the classes will be split mainly into year groups and be taught by existing staff as follows:

Y6 children will begin the transition to Y7, this is an incredibly busy term for the children as they complete their primary education, visit new schools, prepare for the Y6 residential at Gully's and rehearse the leavers performance. Y6 PE will be on Monday.

Y5 will join together as they begin to prepare for Y6 and understand the expectations staff will have as they move to their last year at Brockley and end of KS2 SAT's. Y5 PE will be on the new day of Thursday and swimming on Friday mornings will continue as usual.

Y4 children will spend the term preparing for Y5 and being the older children in their class. Their focus will be around being role models and taking up responsibilities from the children moving on as well as making sure the Y4 curriculum is covered. Y4 PE will be on Tuesday.

We hope by putting this plan together, we can minimise any further disruption to the children and ensure there is a consistency in behaviour and learning for all KS2 children. Should you wish to discuss the matter further please don't hesitate to contact school.

Many thanks for your continuing support.

  • Trucks Causing Concerns - Please report to school

We have informed Donna Finlay Hales our local councillor about the trucks causing concern as they are passing school at high speed. Donna has assured me, that the company has been made aware and will plan a different route. Please keep school and Donna informed of any issues - these trucks should not be using Clowne Rd.

  • Brockley Primary School - Our Ethos & Approach to Inclusivity

    Wed 24 May 2023

At Brockley Primary we are proud to be a warm, welcoming and fully inclusive school. Whilst we may not always get things right, we try our best for every child and will always listen and try to address any concerns brought to our attention.

Every child in our school has different needs from the simplest need of a step to reach the sink, a pencil grip to help them hold their pencil correctly or extra care and reassurance as they get to school in the morning to the more complex needs of different methods of communication, larger physical aids and medication.

Some of our children need support with their academic work, some need help with the physical challenges they face, and others need emotional and behavioural support, which is often the hardest need for people who do not know the full story to understand. Some children need support because of traumatic events in their lives, some children will always need support, and some will eventually be able to function independently again.

Our children are some of the most patient, understanding and supportive young people I have ever had the privilege of working with. They support each other and are not afraid to ask why a child needs a wheelchair or what their medicine is for. They do not hesitate to try to communicate with children who do not communicate as they do.

However, it has been brought to my attention that unfortunately we have recently had reports from distressed parents who have heard or seen other parents discussing children’s behaviour and being incredibly unkind. There is usually a reason behind a child’s behaviour or provision, and I ask you to consider why a child may be ‘acting out’ or receiving additional support as opposed to condemning them, their parent’s behaviour management or the school’s strategies.

If you have any concerns for your child and their needs, whether they are academic, physical or emotional needs, please do not hesitate to make an appointment to see either their class teacher or myself as SENDCo/Headteacher and we will ensure we do our best to support you.

  • Household Fund Support - Applications now open

    Fri 12 May 2023

As part of the Council’s HSF4 distribution plans, we are pleased to be able to re-open our Children's Professionals Grants for Families route as of 11 May.

The Household Support Fund (HSF) is a grant that has been awarded to Councils by the DWP (Department for Work and Pensions) to help vulnerable families and households facing financial hardship to help pay for food, energy and essential living costs. The HSF has now been extended for a year up to the end of March 2024 and is referred to as ‘HSF4’.

Each family/household can access a max of 3 HSF grant payments between now and March 2024 via the Children’s Professionals route.

The Derbyshire Discretionary Fund Team will also be issuing HSF grants (max of 3 in a rolling 12 month period to all household types), but in a change from previous schemes, awards via DDF will NOT count towards the max of 3 available via the CS Pros route (and vice versa).

Please read the updated guidance and FAQs.

What and who is the funding for?

ANY family can apply for the fund you do not need to be in receipt of benefits to access it.

The fund is for 'ESSENTIAL LIVING COSTS'

The DWP guidance states “essential living costs” may include, but are not limited to, support with other bills, including broadband or phone bills, clothing, and essential transport-related costs such as recurring or distant hospital appointments or repairing a car need to get to work/getting children to school, buying a bicycle or paying for fuel.

Although housing is covered by the fund, we are not asking staff to make assessments and award funds for housing because HSF funds have been awarded to district and borough councils for this purpose.

The fund can also be used to pay for essential white goods such as washing machines, freezers etc but if a family you are working with needs these items and cannot pay for them, you should ideally refer them to the Derbyshire Discretionary Fund (DDF) for a more in-depth assessment to access the existing Exceptional Pressure Grant scheme.

If you would like to discuss or apply for the fund then please get in touch with Mrs Rodgers.
